Description

What influence does water have on us? What happens when it disappears?

What is becoming a global problem is gradually becoming visible in the south of Spain. The year 2022 was the warmest and driest year to date and it doesn’t seem to be changing, which is currently leading to severe water problems. The water crisis manifests itself in crop failures, empty reservoirs and dwindling lagoons. Although the climate crisis plays an important role, it is only one piece of the puzzle. The problem lies deeper and is closely linked to the cultural understanding of water in Spain.

In her photo book Tierra sin Agua (Land without Water), Ana Rodríguez Heinlein examines the multi-layered contexts of the water crisis in Spain. With the help of images and texts, including an essay and observations from a travel diary, she creates a narrative that juxtaposes different facets of the topic. The way in which she combines images and joins image and text creates a subjective documentary work.
