Description
What remains of a colonial past when it disappears from the cityscape, is distorted in the archive – or reappears as a backdrop?
Invisible City is a visual search for traces in the Chinese metropolis of Qingdao: starting from a colonial photo archive, Jimmi Wing Ka Ho follows the visible and invisible traces of German colonial rule – from restored Wilhelminian-style villas to myth-enshrouded underground sewage systems. The city itself becomes an archive in which history disappears, is rewritten – and yet continues to have an impact.
The book was created as part of the Artist Meets Archive Residency of the International Photoscene Cologne at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Cologne
