In his essay, writer and artist Isaiah Lopaz recounts rediscovered memories, yearning desires, and the bitter and painful disappointment that his refuge, Europe, has become. His text powerfully testifies to how, despite racism and exclusion, he rediscovers his diverse and multifaceted identities as a sanctuary, developing his own poetic language and strength within it. The text is accompanied by thirteen collages from the series Anthology/Appendix, which explores themes such as diaspora, longing, isolation, and belonging.

Isaiah Lopaz is a transdisciplinary artist and writer who works with collages, performances, text-based media, and curated discussion formats. Born on occupied Tongva land and raised in an African-American working-class household, Lopaz is a queer, multi-sited migrant of Geechee, Anishinaabe, and Muskogee heritage, living in Berlin, Brussels, and Rotterdam.
