What happens when the water disappears?

New heat and drought records are broken almost every year. In Spain, this leads to profound water problems: crop failures, empty reservoirs, shrinking lagoons – an ecological and social collapse is looming. The crisis is not only a consequence of climate change, but is also closely linked to irrigation and agricultural policies in regions like Andalusia.

Spain is known as the "vegetable garden of Europe" —a large proportion of our fruit and vegetables come from regions where water scarcity has long been structural. This means our consumption is also part of a system that depletes natural resources and exacerbates ecological imbalances.

In her photo-documentary project Tierra sin Agua (Land Without Water), Ana Rodríguez Heinlein examines the complex interrelationships of the water crisis in Spain. Using images, texts, and notes from a travel diary, she creates a multi-layered narrative that reveals how closely environment, culture, and responsibility are intertwined.
