In the twelfth year of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, all of Europe finds itself in a state of perpetual crisis. At a time when grief or anger permeates public and private life, the idea of a future often seems unattainable. Solomiya No. 5 – After Now reflects on hope and freedom not as a triumph, but as a complex, often compromised condition—entangled in inequality, marked by trauma, and appropriated by power.

Featuring diverse voices from Yemen to Ukraine, from Georgia to Germany, the new issue of Solomiya focuses on the conditions of the present that shape the paths to possible futures. Texts and artistic reflections from 21 artists, academics, and journalists navigate the dead ends of communication and confront the paradox of imagining future realities in the midst of ongoing war. They create space for doubt, contradiction, and the possibility of error through testimonies from soldiers and expressions of bodily experience—from dancers, imaginary chess pieces, dopamine-fueled superheroes, astronauts, and dried watermelons.
