IN LIEBE VON was chosen as one of the 25 most beautiful German books of 2024 and honored by the Book Art Foundation with a celebratory release night at the Bücherbogen bookstore in Berlin.
The German Book Art Foundation (Stiftung Buchkunst) has announced the 25 winners of its "Most Beautiful German Books 2024" competition. Our book , IN LOVE OF – A Picture. A Text. A Love. , edited by Helena Melikov, was among those honored in the General Literature category. The foundation's release night took place on June 17th at the Bücherbogen bookstore on Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg. The winning books were presented to enthusiastic applause by Birte Kreft and Carolin Blöink of the German Book Art Foundation . The competition recognizes books from a wide range of genres, from school and children's books to art books. The community of book lovers comes from diverse backgrounds and shares a common passion for the printed word.
IN LOVE FROM – One Image. One Text. One Love. is a collection of contemporary love letters written by 21 authors in response to old black-and-white photographs and is presented by the Lost and Found project. The book spans past, present, and future through photography and literature, with a letter written by an artificial intelligence (GPT-4) offering a new perspective on the growing role of AI in writing. These letters reflect the complexities of human relationships and emotions by exploring the powerful connection between photography and the written word.
Lost and Found, a project by Helena Melikov, was launched in 2016. It focuses on vernacular photography—photos discovered at flea markets that have no discernible history. These amateur snapshots of everyday life are given new meaning by Lost and Found , which places them in other contexts such as short stories, poems, or dialogues. The project invites us to consider the photos as carriers of meaning and to question our perception and interpretation of images. SHIFT BOOKS plans to publish further editions of Lost and Found in the future.
The release night concluded with an opportunity to examine all the winning books more closely. Bookmakers from various fields congratulated each other and signed copies of their works before leaving the book fair to enjoy the warm evening air outside. It was a wonderful evening full of inspiration and exchange.
