We are delighted that SHIFT BOOKS has been shortlisted for the Berlin Publishing Prize, and is the first art and photography book publisher ever to achieve this. For us, this is a special recognition of our publishing work and the themes we have been exploring for many years.
The Berlin Publishing Prize honors independent publishers who contribute to the city's cultural diversity with clear programs, a strong stance on content, and ongoing commitment. The award ceremony took place at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and brought together many different publishers and perspectives – from literary programs to political and social issues.
Being shortlisted in this environment means, above all, visibility for us: for artistic publications, for the medium of art books, and for a working method strongly characterized by collaboration, trust, and long-term processes. Many of our projects arise from close exchange with artists and designers. :innen, translator :internal and production partners :innen – often over a long period of time.
Even though the main prize went to other publishers this year, we take the nomination as important confirmation. It shows that independent publishing beyond classic genres and market logics is being recognized and taken seriously.
We would like to thank the jury and all participating colleagues. We thank the authors and our network, which makes this work possible in the first place. The shortlist motivates us to continue on our chosen path – with carefully developed books, a clear stance, and great curiosity for future projects.
